An awesome and moving documentary. Directed by Lucy Walker. Brazilian-born, Brooklyn-based artist Vik Muniz sets out on an ambitious project to illuminate the life of Brazilian landfill pickers to the world, through his artwork.
Waste Land
Initially, I was intrigued in finding out his process for converting “garbage into art.” But the project goes much deeper than that. Concerned with social and environmental issues, this turned out to be more of a social experiment than just an art project. By turning the pickers themselves into artists and giving them a new perspective, a transformation of their lives occurred. This transformation paralleled the artwork perfectly — “the trash turning into a treasure.” Really inspiring.
